Procurement Expert and MCIPS holder Ismail Ibrahim Al Janahi reflects on the evolution of modern procurement

Procurement in the Middle East is undergoing a defining shift. Once regarded as an operational necessity, it is now recognised as a strategic powerhouse, directly contributing to national visions, economic transformation and global competitiveness.

In this new era, Procurement Expert and MCIPS holder Ismail Ibrahim Al Janahi is among the region’s emerging leaders shaping what world-class procurement looks like. With a philosophy firmly rooted in governance, value creation and digital enablement, Al Janahi is helping drive a modern approach to procurement that is agile, accountable and future focused.

Procurement strategy & vision

For Al Janahi, procurement’s evolution is unmistakable. It has become a force for organisational progress when given the mandate and capability to lead. “A modern procurement function goes beyond compliance,” he tells us. “Its mission is to deliver measurable value, optimise processes, strengthen governance, and build strong supplier ecosystems. When aligned with corporate strategy, procurement becomes a key enabler of operational excellence, innovation, and long-term organisational success.”

The experienced Al Janahi sees several strategic themes defining high-performing procurement functions. These include “building strong and collaborative supplier relationships, supporting local and diverse suppliers where applicable, and leveraging digital tools to enable smarter, data-driven decision making”. Alongside this, enhancing transparency and embedding sustainability are central to maintaining integrity and delivering value at scale. It reflects a broader shift he has witnessed firsthand.

“Procurement has evolved from being a transactional function to becoming a strategic partner,” he reveals. The direction of travel is clear; more integration, more digital intelligence and far greater strategic influence.

Supplier & stakeholder engagement

As procurement takes on a more strategic mandate, the art of supplier engagement becomes more critical than ever. For Al Janahi, trusted partnerships begin long before a contract is awarded. They rely on “transparent processes and consistent evaluation criteria” reinforced by structured onboarding, regular engagement and meaningful supplier performance reviews.

Supplier Relationship Management frameworks, he believes, make a tangible difference. Supported by scorecards, KPIs and improvement plans, they “create a supplier ecosystem that is reliable, transparent, and mutually beneficial, while adhering to ethical and responsible sourcing. And upholding fairness, anti-corruption principles and long-term value”.
